Answering the call of the horses: Safia Khider

Safia 2

My journey from Marrakech to Colorado is teaching me so much about myself but most importantly about who I want to continue being in this world: a person with compassion who will not stop learning how to better be and act with horses.

My luck has brought me to ROTH and to Anna Twinney, an incredibly talented and compassionate horsewoman who gives a voice to the voiceless and travels the world to teach the language of the horse. Her generosity has brought me to her ranch where I have the honor and the incredible chance to work with her horses and to get her training. I am very excited and happy to share this journey in my blog with all of those out there who, just like me, have longed to truly understand and listen to the horses…

Safia’s favorite quote:

“Once you give your horse a voice, be ready and willing to hear what he has to say.”

~ Anna Twinney

It is a good reminder as I have seen a lot of people not liking what they “hear” once they give a voice to the horses.

Horse Whispering Knows No Border, No Boundaries…

Unlike people, horses speak the same language no matter where they live in the world. No matter what breed they are, no matter the culture they live within, no matter the native tongue of their land … their method of communication remains unaltered.
World-renowned horsewoman, animal communicator, and Usui Holy Fire Reiki Master, Anna Twinney speaks English and German. More often than not, Anna can be found speaking “horse” and teaching others to do the same. Recently, she traveled to Morocco.
“It doesn’t matter where I travel to, the issues people experience with their horses are very similar,” Twinney explains. Morocco was no exception.
Throughout my travels around the globe, I find people either looking for or clinging to a system.  They want a method that works with 100% of horses, 100% of the time.  And when the method doesn’t work, when they have run out of “steps” and come to the end without the result they seek, the blame usually falls squarely on the horse.
“I met some incredible, kind, generous and enthusiastic people. It didn’t matter if they were rich or poor, experienced or new to the world of horses.  As with everywhere I travel, I was asked the same question, “How do I get my horse to…?”, or, “How do I get my horse to stop…?”.  I told them the same thing I tell everyone. In order to fix the problem, you have to know why it is happening (or not happening), and that cannot be solved with a system or a quick fix.  That can only be solved by communication.”
The challenge with a system is that, by its very nature, it is self-limiting and founded in linear, logical, left-brain thinking.  Every system has steps to follow, expected outcomes, and rigid guidelines. In horsemanship, if a system fails, the only options are to try it again, find another system, or blame the horse, which, in extreme cases, can result in abuse of the horse.
Anna’s methodologies, however, are founded in a fluency of the communication system of the horse.
Twinney sums it up this way, “If you are fluent in the language of Equus a whole world of partnership and training open up for you.  You begin to discover who your horse is and why he does what he does.  If your training methods aren’t working, you can understand why and adapt.  Be creative.  When you work in this way, you are partners with your horse, solving problems, exploring all that is possible, and creating a program unique to each horse.  For me that is far better, and a lot more fun, than simply training a horse and imposing a training method on every horse equally.”
While in Morocco, Anna demonstrated her work to many people from all walks of life and interests in horses.  It was this creative, communicative and cooperative approach that fascinated them the most.  To see Anna quietly speaking and working with the horses, treating each horse as an individual, and solving some of their most difficult issues right in front of their eyes was earthshattering.  Many of them, for the first time, saw a side of the horses they had never seen and learned that harder wasn’t the solution, understanding was.

ROTH in Morocco and HorseLifestyle TV

Anna is one of the most gifted horse trainers I have ever met. Not only does she get great results with the horses whom she works with, she is also able to transfer and teach her ideas and knowledge in a clear way to spectators of all ages.

When I learned that she was giving a demonstration in Marrakech, Morocco, I wanted to see if we were able to capture the essence of Anna.

Morocco is not one of the first places that come to mind when one thinks of new clientele perspective. I have seen very little renowned trainers travel the world to not so developed environments to share their knowledge with the less fortunate and to basically have no “financial return of investment” of their time and effort.

So when Anna rolled up her sleeves and took on the challenge, I wanted to be right there.

I firmly believe that we can make huge changes in the world if we share knowledge, with everyone. A big part of being with horses consists of body language, from both human and horse at any given time. How do you put that in writing?

“One image says more than a thousand words” so therefore we share knowledge through video with HorseLifestyle.TV.

To ensure that anyone can learn and understand, from 8 to 80 and from all educational levels, anywhere in the world.

Because when people know better, they do better.

Anna and I share the dream to help people become the best they can be, for both them and their horse.

Irrespective of what they own or where they live. And by sharing the best knowledge in the world, hopefully we can contribute into making the world a better place for horses and their people.
