I can’t tell you how many times over the past couple years I’ve heard that from people wanting to know how I started a thriving business from absolutely nothing but my talents and skills, desire, and faith in myself.
It couldn’t be a better time to get serious and take action to start a new business, or ramp up your existing business. Most of your success is rooted in your mindset, but there are actually some really sound reasons why now is the PERFECT time to start.
Entrepreneur magazine, at the beginning of the current economic slide in 2009, gave a David Letterman-like list of 10 reasons why an economic slowdown is the PERFECT TIME to start a business. I’ll just share a couple of them with you here. They still hold true.
- Everything is cheaper: Of course, right now gasoline isn’t (although it has been coming down). But I’d just about bet if you look around, you’ll find that many of the things you’ll need to efficiently conduct business are cheaper than ever before. As your business grows, your dollars to help it grow even more will go further.
- Ownership equals tax incentives: You should NEVER go into business just for tax purposes. But, let’s face it, with the “fiscal cliff” and higher taxes looming in the U.S. and fiscal trouble all over the Europe and the world, saving should be a high priority. As a business owner, you have many more opportunities to save than the average taxpayer.
- You can get good PR by showing you are going against the trend: While other businesses downsize, you LEAP forward, reaching out into new markets, trying new things, and showing others how to be successful by your example. Social media, the web, and even your local and regional news outlets are DYING to find people who buck the current trend! This means more clients and more exposure for your business.
The list goes on, but I think you get the idea. You’ll be ideally-placed for the next big upswing if you’ve navigated all the bumps in the road early.
