Happy Birthday Cloud!

17 Years Old and Going Strong

Dear Cloud Fans;

May 29th, we celebrated the birthday of Cloud, son of the stunning, black stallion Raven and Phoenix, the palomino mare, who is 21 years young this spring.

Seventeen years ago, Anni Williams and I were on Tillett Ridge in the Pryor Mountains engrossed in filming a young stallion trying to breed his father’s newly won mare. His father, Opposite, was off playing with nearby bachelors. The filly had successfully fought off the two year-old when his father returned to sniff his son, and I guessed that this young son would soon be “asked” to leave the family.
That’s when I noticed a flash of white in the trees to my left and had the presence of mind to pan my camera just as Phoenix led her newborn, nearly white son in front of us. The band followed close behind with Raven protectively pulling up the rear. As the newborn colt tottered by I whispered to Anni, “Do you know how special this is?” At the time I had no idea that the fragile colt would become an ambassador for all mustangs in the West.

Cloud, May 23, 2012

Last week, Lauryn and I were elated to find Cloud and his family (Aztec, Jasmine, Breeze, the Black, Dancer, Agate, Ingrid, Lynx, Feldspar and her foal) in intermittent rain and snow. All 11 were looking fabulous. The gray colt at Feldspar’s side instantly won our hearts. As we watched him play with Ingrid’s yearling son, Lynx (son of the deceased stallion Ferdinand), I sensed a band stallion in the making—if he survives. Cloud’s only living son is Bolder, but he was not raised by Cloud. The gray colt represents a chance for Cloud to raise a son. We laughed when the colt tried to mimic his father. Cloud had defecated on the spot where one of his mares had urinated. The gray colt sniffed the area and tried to urinate on the same spot. He missed the mark by about three feet, but he tried nevertheless!

Cloud himself looks grand as you can see. We watched him drive the band stallions Mescalero and Morning Star away. At 17 years of age, he has not missed a beat and still moves with the easy grace of his father and the fierce determination he first exhibited as a bachelor stallion. Cloud tried to start a family at the tender age of four and nearly died trying. At five, he succeeded in winning a mare in a most unorthodox way. Since that time his family has grown, and he has consistently led one of the largest bands on the Pryor Mountains.

Going after Morning Star

We hope you’ll share with us a birthday wish that Cloud might remain a powerful leader in his mountain stronghold. You go big boy! PBS is celebrating his birthday too with a short video update we just completed before heading up to Montana last week. Check it out on PBS Nature’s site.

Happy Trails!

Hope for Horses Slated for Slaughter

There are several ways a horse can end up in the slaughter house, and just as many ways to rescue them.

Anna Twinney with PMU foal

Robyn Dolby, of Woodbury, adopted a horse through a rescue program seven years ago. Her horse, Tytus, is an enormous black percheron that weighs 1,400 pounds and 18 “hands” high. A “hand” is the standard method of measuring a horse and equals 4 inches.

Tytus came from Equine Angels Rescue, E.A.R., of New Milford, which has rescued 100s of PMU foals over the last 11 years. Premarin, or PMU, stands for pregnant mare urine.

Dolby said Tytus is a wonderful riding horse. “When we went to get him there were about a dozen foals there. They were shy with humans, and they would only let you get a little close before they would run away,” she said.

“He was scared at first, but he didn’t suffer before we got him. They ween the foals too early, but when Frank gets them, the farmers will let them stay with their mother longer,” Dolby said, speaking of Frank Weller, founder of the non-profit organization,Equine Angels Rescue, E.A.R.

Weller’s first experience working with the foals affected him deeply. “We took two hours to feed 240 of the foals and I stayed overnight with them.  The energy that came off of them was very intense, very inspiring. The foals hadn’t had the benefit of being around people or other horses so they are very……click here to read full article.

You wanted President Obama’s help saving the mustangs? Well here’s your chance…

Let’s sign this petition on whitehouse.gov and maybe we can finally get the administration to see the importance of protecting our wild horses over securing corporate profits at the expense of the mustangs and burros. We only need 5000 signatures to be heard. But imagine if we had 10,000 or 100,000! Let’s make it happen!

Horses destined for Slaughter on September 12th… Can you help?

See Pictures of these beautiful beings here.

About 50 horses need to be adopted or they will go to slaughter. They are in Crested Butte, CO.

My Dear Horse Friends, The following photos are of a herd of horses in Crested Butte. They were found starving in June by a neighboring rancher. He opened his pastures to them and they have been eating and slowly recovering. They will be shipped to a Mexican slaughterhouse next week. Sandy Jones is adopting 2 of them on Tuesday, the 6th. She is meeting the brand inspector there and is trailering 3 of them back to Evergreen. Pam Ogle is adopting a 3rd (buckskin filly) horse to be transported in Sandy’s trailer. Many of them have ringworm, which is easily treatable . It may require some quarantine from other horses for a few weeks. Their hoof condition is pretty good.

If you know anyone interested in providing a home for any of these horses, please contact Sandy (email address below) or phone 303-550-3836. I can provide transportation for two of them if needed. Sincerely, Brooke

Outpouring of Help for Freckles

From Jan……
Dear Friends in Horses, I am overwhelmed today by the outpouring of generosity on behalf of Freckles.  I just left his side….he is a sweet boy…but sooo thin. I have attached pictures. He is one step away from animal control seizure.

Freckles

When I told Eddie I had 6 bales of alfalfa and a bucket of rice bran in my car he started to cry….he was so grateful…then he told me Freckles had not eaten since yesterday.  If I had not been there today, Freckles would not have eaten today…..

I told him how several people stepped forward to donate money for feeding Freckles and that we would have enough to feed him for a month, so we can get his weight back up.  On Tuesday I will get Stable Mix Senior to supplement the horse’s feed regimen.

After spending time with Freckles and enjoying watching him dive into his 2 flakes of alfalfa, I returned home to find an email from a retirement rescue willing to take him for life.  I immediately called Eddie to tell him that if it comes to that, Freckles has a home to go to. Freckles has equine angels lining up to support him…..and it is one of those days in Rescue that truly overpower me emotionally…there is so much pain in Rescue , but there is so much joy and so many miracles too.  Today is truly miraculous, thanks to you!!!!

Freckles

You have the undying gratitude of a 30 YO QH who now knows he will not go without a meal. And an owner so grateful, he wanted to know how he could repay us. I told him that he cannot repay us….that these are gifts of love from people who love and protect horses in crisis. As I pulled out of the drive, he told me all of you will be in his prayers tonight.

I will keep you posted on Freckles progress.  They have been together for 20 years, and I knew as I stood there in his presence Freckles would not want to leave Eddie.  At least not right now.  So for at least the next month he has feed. We pray Eddie gets the job he has been searching for and all this will go away!

Thank you again for your love and support of horses in crisis. What a wonderful Thanksgiving gift!
For the horses,
Jan

Reach Out to Foals, Ray of Light PMU Foal Handling

Anna, I just watched the videos of the last days of the foal handling course. The stories of each foals journey, as well as the students, touched my heart deeply as I smiled through happy tears. Thanks again for doing this incredible work and for your compassionate heart. It was so good to see Paul with his two new friends. He is so happy. He and the foals are very lucky to have one another.

Warmly,
Kathy

——————————————————————————————–

From feral foals to foals in training, Anna shares her Reach Out to Horses methods with students from around the Globe as they gentle untouched foals rescued from the Canadian Slaughter houses. As a bi-product of the drug Premarin, these weanlings have found Sanctuary at Ray of Light Farms. Embarking on their week’s training, you can witness their progress. Haltered, saddle blankets (in prep for blanketing), picking up feet & their first steps….for those interested in learning more, the new 4-part DVD Foals in Training is scheduled to be launched January 2011.

Meet 5 very special PMU foals as they graduate from the Reach Out to Horses foals in training course at Ray of Light Farms, Connecticut. Just 6 days ago they were untouched youngsters uncertain if their first touch would represent their first experience to human exposure; where their numbers were shaved on their side and coggins taken without their permission. Now they willingly approach, accept touch, halters, blankets, having their feet cleaned & being lead around obstacle courses.

Anna created a rare opportunity for her students to gentle 5-month old PMU foals, destined for slaughter in Canada, they found their way to Ray of Light Farms. Within just 6 days, Anna was able to share her unique natural horsemanship methods with those sharing her passion. Now these foals are on their way to a brighter future and you can witness their graduation day. With tears in their eyes the students present “their” foals for you to share in the magical moments. The transformation is described as a miracle, please spread the word of compassionate communication.

Horse whisperer gentles PMU weanlings – foals in training, CT

Nearly 6,000 foals leave Canada each year as a bi-product of the hormone replacement therapy drug, Premarin. As their mother’s urine is collected on the pee-line, the foal’s destiny is even less bright, unless saved. Equine Angels & Ray of Light Farms, CT celebrate the arrival of 10 weanlings, while Anna Twinney of Reach Out to Horses arranges the FIRST foal gentling clinic of this kind. Follow the foal’s first week in training.

These foals have come a long way since their arrival at the farm in late October. Anna Twinney has guided students to successfully gentle the foals who previously had little to no human interactions. Now the foals are learning to accept being approached, touched, groomed, haltered, led, have feet picked up and picked out, among other things; and are learning that working with people can be a positive experience.  http://www.rayoflightfarm.org/Premarins_2010.htm

Protests Sweep California for Wild Horses

Rallies Saturday in Sacramento, Los Angeles and Del Mar

Los Angeles (October 22, 2010)—Three California cities join the second wave of national protests calling for a freeze on Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) wild horse and burro roundups. The removals of more than 11,000 symbols of freedom are slated for permanent removal from our Western public lands in fiscal year 2011 (beginning in October, 2010).

“The BLM is pushing forward with massive roundups using a budget not yet approved by Congress, against the will of the American people and the intent of the Wild Horse and Burro Act,” explains Cloud Foundation Director, Ginger Kathrens. “Congress needs to rein in the BLM who is managing our wild horses to extinction at taxpayer expense.”

Currently the huge Adobe Town/Salt Wells roundup in Southern Wyoming continues at an estimated cost of more than $3.5 million to remove more than 1,500 healthy Mustangs living free on public lands. BLM plans to start limiting public access by placing trap sites on private land.

Wild horses create biodiversity and a sustainable landscape. Countries such as England have reintroduced wild horses to heal the land and bring back ecological balance. The horse evolved to its present form in North America and in the 1500s returned with the Spanish Conquistadors to the Americas. This returned-native species flourished and in 1974 more than 50,000 roamed the United States/American West. Today far less than half that number remain in the wild.

California has lost 16 of the original 38 wild horse herds designated for protection in 1971. BLM recently devastated the Twin Peaks California herd, leaving only 450 mustangs and 72 burros on the 1,250 square mile Twin Peaks wild horse and burro herd management area.

Many roundups have been linked to energy development projects, other extractive industries and the fight for water rights–all competing for public land use. Corporate Geothermal projects in California alone are able to lease land from the BLM for as low as $7 per acre.

“Removing mustangs from public lands releases land use restrictions and creates ecological disaster. The West is being transformed into an industrial zone for extractive industries: oil, gas, gold mining, uranium mining and more,” states Terri Farley, author of the Phantom Stallion series who will speak at the Sacramento rally.

Protests are scheduled for the following locations:

Scheduled protests:

October 23: Los Angeles, CA - CNN Los Angeles, 6430 W. Sunset Blvd

October 23: Sacramento, CA - West Steps of Capitol Bldg (10th and Capitol Mall)

October 23: Del Mar, CA - Del Mar Fairgrounds

October 23: Phoenix, AZ – John McCain’s Phoenix office, 5353 North 16th St

Nationwide Protests Planned to Halt Mustang & Burro Roundups

BLM’s failure to instate even a partial moratorium inspires protests around US

Boston, MA (October 7, 2010)— Following over 35 protests in late 2009/2010, rallies will resume this month in at least seven states nationwide to draw attention to the plight of America’s wild horse and burro herds. Protests in 12 more states are in the works. Currently nearly 40,000 wild horses and burros are held in pens and pastures at taxpayer expense while the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) private contractors rush to roundup over 3,200 more wild horses and burros before the end of the year. Despite the delivery of a Unified Moratorium Letter last fall to President Obama, Interior Secretary Salazar and BLM Director Bob Abbey which called for an immediate freeze on all non-emergency roundups—the BLM has not changed course. On July 30th, 54 Congressional Representatives sent a letter to both Secretary Salazar and Director Abbey demanding a moratorium and review of the wild horse and burro program.  Regardless of public and political outrage the BLM has not made an honest effort to work with Congress or the public on solutions and improved management of all of America’s remaining wild horse and burro herds.

“There is no excuse for BLM’s inability to manage America’s wild horses and burros,” explains Cloud Foundation Director and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Ginger Kathrens. “If the BLM wants to work with the interested public on solutions then our wild horses and burro herds require a ceasefire. Ground the helicopters and let’s talk about fixing things. Continuing the costly, poor management practices of BLM that is leading to the total annihilation of the last of our wild mustang and burro herds is inexcusable.”

Members of the public are encouraged to start protests in their hometowns and join those already planned. The media is asked to cover protests and learn more about the American mustangs and burros facing management to extinction by the Bureau of Land Management.
